Do You Like Living in a Private House or a Dormitory?
Stephen likes living in a private house better than in a dormitory for a number of reasons. First, it costs less. For example, she paid $ 120 a month to live in dorm, but it cost her only $ 90 to live in a private home. Second, she has more privacy in a home. In a dorm, she shared a room with another girl, but in a home, she has a room all to herself. Third, it is easier to study in a private room. A dorm is often too noisy, but a home rarely is .Finally, she can keep her car at a house. At campus dorm, there are no parking spaces for student cars. For these reasons, Stephen likes to live off-campus.
My Opinion of Today’s Education
I think one of the main problems with today’s education is that too much emphasis is placed on test scores. For example, if you are a pupil in the primary school and want to go on to study in the middle school, your fate will be decided by the text score. If you are only 0.5 point lower than the required score, no matter how bright you are, you will be rejected.
The competition for high scores among students becomes intense. Students recite verything to get high scores. They do endless exercises; they learn on Sunday, in all their vactaion, not for knowledge but for high scores. In their mind, there is nothing else but high scores.
Teachers are apt to give the students high scores. That’s natural, for their ability of teaching is measured by the scores their students get.
New Year’s Eve
I spent this year’s New Year’s Eve with some friends in a bar near the university.
We sat in the candlelight in a corner at the bar, drinking red wine. I seldom drink in my life but that night was special. Besides, I did like the colour of that wine, especially when it was contained in a transparent glass. It made me feel romantic and beyond the daily routines of my life. We started talking about our plan for the new year. The more ambitious people among us were already planning to make more money to buy a flat for their own. My plan was quite modest. I just hoped to be happy and have a peaceful mind.
When we walked out of the bar, there were still many people on the street. They seemed also to be pursuing their new year.
